Q: What are the steps to becoming an LCSW in Texas?
A: To become an LCSW in Texas, you must:

 

  • Earn a Master of Social Work (MSW) Degree: Ensure your program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

  • Obtain LMSW Licensure: After earning your MSW, apply for and obtain the Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) credential by passing the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Master's examination.

  • Complete Supervised Experience: Gain at least 3,000 hours of supervised experience in a clinical setting over a minimum of 24 months. This must include 100 hours of direct supervision by a board-approved LCSW supervisor.

  • Pass the ASWB Clinical Exam: After completing your supervised hours, pass the ASWB Clinical examination.

  • Apply for LCSW Licensure: Submit your application for LCSW licensure to the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council (BHEC) and complete any additional requirements.
